Losing a loved one is never easy. The Manitoba Islamic Association is committed to helping families dealing with the loss of a loved one by facilitating funeral arrangements. The MIA offers the Muslim community comforting and supportive funeral services.
Death at the hospital:
- Provide the hospital consent for MIA to take care of the funeral arrangements.
- Fill out the Vital Statistics form.
Death at home:
- Call 911 or police.
- Inform the police/medical examiner that the MIA will make funeral arrangements.
- Fill out the Vital Statistics form.
Pre-arrangements:
If you anticipate the passing of a loved one soon, you can contact us to make pre-arrangements.

What happens after you notify us?
- We will collect some essential information from you.
- MIA will arrange transport for the deceased to the MIA funeral facility.
- Arrangements for Ghusl (ritual washing and shrouding of the deceased) will be made
- MIA will provide a shroud (kafan) and a wooden casket.
- The funeral will be scheduled in consultation with the family. Usually, the funeral prayer and burial take place 2 days after death. If the death occurs on the weekend, there may be further delays.
- If the family wishes, MIA will announce the funeral to the community through email and social media.
- The funeral prayer will be held at the Grand Mosque on Waverley. If the family chooses a different location, there will be an additional transportation cost.
- MIA will arrange transportation for the deceased to the cemetery.
- An Imam will oversee the burial and perform Dua’a for the deceased at the cemetery.
- MIA will issue a Declaration of Death to the next of kin.
Cemeteries with a Muslim Section:
Transcona cemetery: 5150 Dugald Road
- MIA will make arrangement with the city of Winnipeg for burial.
Glen Lawn cemetery: 455 Lagimodiere Blvd
- MIA will connect the family with the cemetery staff to make the arrangements.
Overseas burials:
- If the loved one needs to be transported to another country/ province, the process will vary.
Funeral payment & cost:
- Families are responsible for covering the costs of the funeral. The MIA can accept payment and then pay 3rd party costs. Where applicable, we can bill insurance, EI or the government directly.
- The cost varies depending on choice of cemetery, season, and family preferences. It ranges from $6,000 to $9,000.
