Introduction to the History of the Qur’an

Join us for an in-depth journey into the history of the Qur’anic text. This intensive course will cover topics such as oral transmission, written compilation, composition during the lifetime of the Prophet PBUH.

Local Facilitators

Sh.Ismael Ibrahim Mukhtar an Islamic scholar, volunteer Imam, educator and has served as a community leader for the Manitoba Muslim community for over three decades. He is also a certified general accountant.

Sh.Ismael studied Islamic knowledge directly under his father, the First Mufti of Eritrea, Sheikh Ibrahim Al-Mukhtar Ahmed Omer. Sheikh Ibrahim Al-Mukhtar was an Azhari scholar who had the privilege of studying under the direction of more than ninety-three eminent scholars.

Sh.Ismael also studied with his uncle and older brother. Both were Azhari scholars.

His study focus includes Fiqh, Usul al Fiqh, Tafseer, hadith, History and Islamic Thought.

Sh. Ismael is the author of: Manitoba Muslims: A History of Resilience and Growth.

Sh. Ammar Khatib is a scholar of the Qur’anic sciences and a specialist in Arabic linguistics. He has written many treatises on matters related to qira’at and the Qur’anic text, and has collaborated closely with Dr. Ghanim Qaduri al-Hamad, one of the foremost specialists in Qur’anic studies in the Muslim world.

Sh. Ammar completed the memorization of the Qur’an at a young age and studied Islamic studies traditionally under many eminent scholars from different parts of the world, including his own father. He obtained several Ijazat in Tajweed, Qira’at, Hadith, and various Islamic fields.  Sh. Ammar holds a Master’s Degree in Islamic studies from the Islamic University of Minnesota and is currently in the final year of PhD studies with the Université Privée Africaine Franco-Arabe in Mali.

He has been serving the Muslim community in Winnipeg for the last 20 years providing religious counselling, khateeb training, and Islamic education. He has been a prominent member of the MIA Fiqh Committee since it was founded.

Sh. Ahmed Abdulkadir Ahmed was born in the city of Ginir, Ethiopia in the year of 1978.

He studied various topics including Arabic, Fiqh, Hadith, Tafseer and Theology with prominent scholars in his town. He also learned directly from his father, who was a member and the head of Dawa and research of the council of Senior Scholars of Ethiopia and the chairman of Islamic Supreme Council of Oromia.

Sh. Ahmed studied at Markaz Al-Ansar boarding school in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia 1994-1996 wherehe completed the memorization of the Qur’an.

He joined the faculty of Islamic studies at Thika Islamic Studies Institute (currently known as Umma University) in Thika, Kenya where he completed a bachelor’s degree in islamic studies in 2003.

In 2014 he got his Ijazah in the memorization of the Qur’an and Tajweed from Mishkah University in Cairo, Egypt.

He provided Islamic education, guidance, counseling, and leadership to the Muslim community ofCalgary, Canada under the leadership of the Muslim Council of Calgary for the last eighteen years (from 2004 – 2022) as an Imam at SW Masjid and Akram Joma Masjid in Calgary, Alberta and as an educator for junior high, high school and Tahfeeth at Calgary Islamic School.

Guest Speakers

Shaykh Dr. Muhammad bin Yahya al-Ninowy is the Founder and Director of Madina Institute, an Islamic seminary in Atlanta,

Georgia, with campuses in South Africa, the United Kingdom, Norway, Sudan, and Malaysia. Dr. Muhammad bin Yahya al-Ninowy is considered to be a Muhaddith; a scholar of Hadith sciences. He has authored books in Usul, Creed, Hadith, and Sufi sciences. He has been a pioneer working on grass root levels to bring back Unconditional compassion and love as the central themes of religion and has been the forerunner promoting non-violence among all people and religions worldwide. Dr. Muhammad bin Yahya al-Ninowy also holds a bachelor’s degree in microbiology from the University of Illinois, and a doctor of medicine degree.

Dr. Mohammad Iqbal Masood al-Nadvi is a well-known Muslim scholar in Canada, amongst the few who have the authority to confer an Islamic legal ruling. Dr. Nadvi has extensively studied the Islamic sciences at some of the world’s leading institutions of Islamic learning. He spent over a decade at the prestigious seminary Dārul ’Ulūm Nadwatul ‘Ulamā, Lucknow, India, where he completed an ālimiyyah degree. He subsequently moved to Saudi Arabia, where he earned a License in Sharīʿah from the Islamic University of Madinah (Jāmiʻah al-Islāmīyah bi-al-Madīnah al-Munawwarah), and completed his Masters and Ph.D. in Sharīʿah, with a specialization in Fiqh from Umm al-Qura University, Makkah (Jāmiʿat ʾUmm Al-Qurā). In addition to his academic studies, Dr. Nadvi has received ijazāt (certificates of authorization) from many of the most renowned scholars of our time. To complement his comprehensive education in the Islamic sciences, he earned a degree in political science from Bhopal University, India.

Dr. Nadvi also has a rich experience in teaching. He was a professor at King Saud University, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, where he taught Sharīʿah and Fiqh for over half a decade. While he was at King Saud, he dealt with topics such as Usūl al-Fiqh, Islamic culture, Islamic political thought, Islamic movements and the Fiqh of organization.

In addition to his teaching, Dr. Nadvi has been very active within the Canadian Muslim community since his arrival. He is the former President of the Islamic Circle of North America (ICNA) and Director of Religious Affairs at Al Falah Islamic Centre and the Muslim Association of Calgary, during which he also served as a member of the University of Calgary chaplaincy team. He is currently the Chairman of the Canadian Council of Imams and the Fiqh Majlis of Canada. Dr. Nadvi also serves on the advisory board of several organizations including the Canadian Muslim Chaplain Organization (CMCO), Ayaat Ilm Academy, and the Proposed Islamic Credit Union in Ontario.

Shaykh Yousef Wahb is an Islamic Law Instructor at the University of Windsor’s Faculty of Law, LexisNexis Canada Family Law Author, and holds a Masters of Law LL.M from the University of Windsor and a Bachelor in Islamic Studies from Al-Azhar University. Shaykh Yousef also serves as a co-founding board member of Green Ummah, founding board member of the University of Windsor Muslim Chaplaincy, and an Islamic Compliance Advisor at Beneficent. Currently, Sh. Yousef is completing his second Masters at the University of Chicago Divinity School.

Dr. Nazir Khan MD FRCPC is the President of Yaqeen Canada and the Director of Research Strategy at Yaqeen Institute for Islamic Research. He is a Neuroradiologist and Assistant Professor at McMaster University. He is also a specialist in the Qur’anic sciences with certification (ijāzah) in the ten readings of the Qur’an through both major and minor routes of transmission. He has also received other certifications (ijāzāt) in Qurʾānic studies (ʿUlūm al-Qurʾan), Hadith, and Islamic theology (ʿaqīdah). He memorized the whole Qur’an during his youth and has served as an Imam for many years. He has taught Islamic theology and Qur’anic studies classes, workshops, and seminars and is a consultant for the Manitoba Islamic Association Fiqh Committee. Dr. Khan completed his residency at the University of Manitoba and fellowship in Diagnostic Neuroradiology at the University of Calgary. His expertise in both medical sciences and Islamic theology uniquely positions him to address challenging contemporary questions regarding faith, reason, and science.
