MIA Statement Regarding the Attack in Ottawa
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Manitoba Muslims React to Attacks on the Nation’s Capital
(Winnipeg – October 23, 2014) The Manitoba Islamic Association, the oldest and largest Muslim community organization in Manitoba, unequivocally condemns yesterday’s attack on the nation’s capital.
“Manitoba Muslims denounce this attack and our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their loved ones, especially the soldiers who lost their lives in Ottawa and Montreal,” said MIA President Idris Elbakri. “Our community stands united against this crime, regardless of the identity of the perpetrators. This position is rooted in our faith tradition and our love for Canada.”
The MIA and the Muslim community are grateful for the sacrifices and professionalism of our security forces that, by all accounts, averted a greater tragedy. We also commend Canadian officials and mainstream media who communicated responsibly to and with the public, avoiding associating the perpetrators with a religious or cultural group until facts were established. Associating the perpetrators with Islam adds fear to the grief that Muslims feel over the loss of life and the attacks on the very symbols of our freedom and democracy.
