Thompson Muslim Association
hompson Muslim Association has existed for approximately thirty five years. There are approximately twenty-seven Muslim families from diverse background and a range of countries that reside in Thompson. The members of the association belong to a wide range of professional discipline. The size of the Muslim community has created an atmosphere of brotherhood where every member knows the other by name and by personality. The community has Jumma prayers regularly and participates in most Islamic practices and calibrations.
Some activities that the members partake in apart from their religious obligation are; bowling, squash, ping pong, jogging, hunting & fishing, weight lifting, swimming and regular home gathering and feasting. Families consist of children, ages ranging from infants to adults. The Thompson Muslim Association has become a branch of the Manitoba Islamic Association and is now referred to as Manitoba Islamic Association – (Thompson Branch or M.I.A – T.C). The main activity at present of M.I.A-T.C is to construct a Masjid.

Thompson History
Thompson was established in 1956 when a major body of oar was discovered. An agreement was signed between INCO Limited and the Manitoba government which initiated the construction of mine, mill, smelter and refinery. The town was incorporated in 1967 on Canada’s Centennial Anniversary. The population of Thompson is approximately 15,000 and was up to 20,000 previously. The population of Thompson and the surrounding areas is approximately 40,000. Thompson is known as the Hub of the North because of its central location.
Industry & Business Sector
The most prominent industries in Thompson and the surrounding areas is nickel mining andhydro electricity. Thompson has a vibrant business sector that includes three shopping malls with several strip malls. The names of some of the businesses are; Safeway, Extrafoods, Tim Horton, Robin’s Donuts, Pizza Hut, Dominoes Pizza, McDonald, several car dealerships, hotels and banking institutions.
Educational Sector
The local School District of Mystery Lake encompasses six elementary grade schools and one high school (R. D. Parker Collegiate). The University College of the North is Thompson’s most recent educational institution and the newest University College that exists in Manitoba. Thompson also hosts University of Manitoba‘s Faculty of Socialwork.
